Dear Brave Souls: My very elderly Hopi and Tewa speaking friends southwest and south of here, say to tell everyone to remember that when they dance they dance for everyone.
This generosity of spirit, so unites rather than qualifies yay or nay based on whatever. What beautiful miel over the heart. Snake dance is danced to be nourished, replenished, including rain. I've seen the snake dance by snake and antelope clans many times in the 60s before it became a tourist crush. The people I know from the mesas are truly kind and truly in sympathy with everyone's need for rain... one of the great-grandsons who is a student at CU just wrote to say that many many are praying that the land be nourished and balanced and that if the need is for rain, then rain also is being prayed for... and the snake dance preparation which is imbedded in a larger cycle, will commence in about 4 weeks, and to know that the Hopi pray for everyone, not just themselves. In an overculture that often seems conflicted about who to pray for, lest they pray for 'an enemy' by accident, the Hopi way has always seemed to me to start with two capital G's: Gentle and Generous. Unlike some, they pray for everyone. Holy Mother too, remember? says all belong to Her, all. Not just those we like or are neutral about. May all the gentle and generous people live long and strong from every tribe, every clan. Yours, mine, ours... for each person on earth comes from a tribe and a clan... perhaps more than one... and you are still a survivor-descendent of... even if, like the stars, your first tribes seem so far away in time and space, and yet they watch over us at all hours, even if only seen in the dark that brings dreaming. This is just to say, thank you all for your prayers, your thoughts, your good wishes for others, and for yourself also. ¡Andele y arriba! With love, dr.e THe image is of the Hopi mesas. © 2012, by mdimages2010, all rights reserved | |
